"Travelers?"

Posted On Tuesday April 17, 2007 By Drifter

What happens when a place remains the same and all the people that made it memorable have moved on? Travelers Diner was practically a 2nd home for me and everyone else I went to the Joe Kubert School with in ’92. Richie, Pat, Bill, Bobby, Rat Boy, Spin Doctor, Chainsaw, Christian, Dr. Who, Tory, Delperdang, Durlum, Ryu, and the endless cast of other characters I went to school with made that time and place unforgettable. Sometimes I ate there more than once a day. All someone had to do was walk into a room and say, “Travelers?”. That’s college life for you. Sometimes I think the main reason we went was so that we could play Street Fighter II until our thumbs bled. Ten years later I was driving through the areas and revisited Travelers. The place was virtually unchanged, except for one thing. Everyone was missing and it just wasn’t the same place at all anymore.

Urban Lake

Posted On Tuesday April 17, 2007 By Ruby

This is the view out my bedroom window today. Like many places in my neighborhood (Williamsburg Brooklyn) it has seen a lot of change. Until a few years ago, it was a one-story building that housed a “specialty foods” warehouse, but then the owners got the idea to tear it down and build condos. Unfortunately the proposed condo building would be 6” from my window. Fortunately, the builders can’t seem to get their act together and all they’ve been able to do so far is dig a big hole. They seem to have a drainage problem, and yesterday’s storm turned the small pond that’s been there into a major lake. They forgot to remove their earth-moving machine, too. (I guess they forgot to listen to the weather forecast).
