"Travelers?"
Posted On Tuesday April 17, 2007 By Drifter
What happens when a place remains the same and all the people that made it memorable have moved on? Travelers Diner was practically a 2nd home for me and everyone else I went to the Joe Kubert School with in ’92. Richie, Pat, Bill, Bobby, Rat Boy, Spin Doctor, Chainsaw, Christian, Dr. Who, Tory, Delperdang, Durlum, Ryu, and the endless cast of other characters I went to school with made that time and place unforgettable. Sometimes I ate there more than once a day. All someone had to do was walk into a room and say, “Travelers?”. That’s college life for you. Sometimes I think the main reason we went was so that we could play Street Fighter II until our thumbs bled. Ten years later I was driving through the areas and revisited Travelers. The place was virtually unchanged, except for one thing. Everyone was missing and it just wasn’t the same place at all anymore.

When I was a teeneager growing up in Jefferson during the early/mid 70’s, we all went to the Travelers in the middle of the night after our shift at the Club New Orleans. I remember the tremendous selection of food, from breakfast stuff to live lobster (in the tank). I have lots of fond memories of the Travellers. I understand the original is being restored by the Diner Museum.
